A 2024 GMC Yukon With Engine, Powertrain, and Electronic Failures

Our client purchased a 2024 GMC Yukon in New Jersey (December 2024). Case notes describe engine failure with metal shavings in the oil, camshaft damage, intermittent power loss while driving, shifting into neutral, 4WD and suspension malfunctions, and infotainment and screen failures. Despite multiple service visits and a full engine replacement, many electrical concerns could not be duplicated. The vehicle underwent 5 repair visits totaling 35 days in repair. Intake indicated the vehicle was in the repair shop for more than 30 days at any time. Current mileage on the odometer: 32,000. The client contacted Easy Lemon for legal assistance under the lemon law.

Case notes record that “The vehicle has undergone 5 repair visits and has spent a total of 35 days in repair.” Further: “the engine had cut off multiple times while driving, and the vehicle shifted into neutral unexpectedly.” And: “The technician found metal shavings in the engine oil and replaced the engine.” Later concerns included “all screens going blank, loss of power steering.”

What Went Wrong

  • Engine failure with metal shavings in the oil: June 2025 service found metal shavings in the engine oil; the engine was replaced after the engine had cut off multiple times while driving.
  • Camshaft damage: March 2025 service for a tapping sound, check engine light, extended cranking, and an “Engine Power Reduced” alert; camshaft damage confirmed and the lifter was replaced.
  • Intermittent power loss while driving: Documented power loss while driving, reduced power during acceleration, and the engine cutting off multiple times.
  • Shifting into neutral: The vehicle shifted into neutral unexpectedly during the June 2025 visit that led to the engine replacement.
  • Infotainment and screen failures: Recurring 360 camera black screen, rear DVD screens powering on and off, all screens going blank, and related electronic malfunctions that technicians often could not duplicate.

Documented Service Could Not Permanently Resolve the Recurring Defects

1

July 16–22, 2024 — Check Engine, 4WD, and Suspension

July 16–22, 2024 (7 days): The check engine light was on, a “Service 4WD” warning appeared, the vehicle would not go into gear, and the air ride suspension would not raise or lower. The technician reprogrammed the ECM and BCM and cleared diagnostic trouble codes.

2

March 26–31, 2025 — Camshaft Damage and Screen Issues

March 26–31, 2025 (6 days): Tapping sound, check engine light, extended cranking, and an “Engine Power Reduced” alert. Camshaft damage was confirmed and the lifter was replaced. The 360 camera display intermittently showed a black screen; software was updated. Rear DVD screens were reported powering on and off on their own.

3

June 3–11, 2025 — Engine Cut Off and Engine Replacement

June 3–11, 2025 (9 days): The engine had cut off multiple times while driving, and the vehicle shifted into neutral unexpectedly. A tapping noise was reported during acceleration. Metal shavings were found in the engine oil and the engine was replaced.

4

June 19, 2025 — Steering Wheel Trim and Electronics

June 19, 2025 (1 day): Leather trim on the steering wheel was peeling and the steering wheel was replaced. After powering off the vehicle, the radio and all electronics remained on; that issue could not be duplicated.

5

June 28–July 9, 2025 — Screens Blank and Power Steering Loss

June 28–July 9, 2025 (12 days): Clicking sound at low speeds, reduced power during acceleration, all screens going blank, loss of power steering, rear DVD screen displaying a red triangle before going black, and the driver’s power step bar remaining extended. Concerns could not be duplicated. A recall was performed during this visit.

Documented repair history covers 5 repair visits totaling 35 days in repair from July 16, 2024 through July 9, 2025 for engine failure with metal shavings in the oil, camshaft damage, intermittent power loss while driving, shifting into neutral, and infotainment and screen failures. Intake indicated the vehicle was in the repair shop for more than 30 days at any time. With those defects documented, the client sought help under the lemon law.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I file a lemon law claim for a GMC Yukon?
Yes. GMC vehicles, including the Yukon, are covered by state lemon laws and the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act when they qualify. If your Yukon has a substantial defect — such as engine failure with metal shavings in the oil, camshaft damage, intermittent power loss while driving, shifting into neutral, or infotainment and screen failures — that authorized service cannot permanently repair after a reasonable number of attempts, or it has been out of service for an extended period, it may qualify as a lemon. The manufacturer is responsible for all attorney fees if you prevail, so you pay nothing out of pocket†.
What is the New Jersey Lemon Law?
New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Warranty Act (the New Jersey Lemon Law, codified at N.J.S.A. § 56:12-29 through § 56:12-49) protects consumers who buy or lease new motor vehicles that have substantial defects covered by warranty. A vehicle may qualify if the same nonconformity has been subject to repair three or more times by the manufacturer or its authorized dealers, or if the vehicle has been out of service by reason of repair for a cumulative total of 20 or more calendar days, within the first 24 months from the date of original delivery or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. Consumers may also pursue claims under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act for vehicles still under the manufacturer’s written warranty.
What does a Cash and Keep settlement mean in a lemon law case?
A Cash and Keep settlement means the manufacturer pays a lump-sum cash settlement to the owner, who keeps the vehicle. It is commonly used when the owner prefers to retain the vehicle after documented repair attempts for a substantial defect, rather than pursuing a full buyback or replacement. The cash amount is negotiated based on the facts of the case.
How does Easy Lemon handle GMC lemon law claims?
Easy Lemon files a formal demand against GMC citing the applicable state lemon law and the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. We handle the documentation, communication with the manufacturer, negotiation, and arbitration or litigation when necessary. Our clients pay nothing out of pocket; the manufacturer is required to pay all reasonable attorney fees if you prevail†.
