How your Iowa claim gets built

Our lemon law work is directed by Steven P. Nassi, Esq., Managing Partner, Easy Lemon by RockPoint Law P.C. An Iowa claim gets built on two things: the Iowa lemon law statute, and the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which applies in all fifty states. Send the repair orders and the purchase or lease paperwork, and we can tell you which of the two fits your vehicle.

Iowa City Lemon Law

Iowa City Lemon Law Basics

In Iowa City, as anywhere else in Iowa, a lemon law claim is brought under Iowa Code §322G.1 to §322G.15. The statute covers new motor vehicles purchased or leased in Iowa for personal, family, or household use, but being covered is only the start. The car also has to reach one of the repair limits in the box above, with the defect still unrepaired and the deadline not yet passed. If it does, you may have a claim. Our Iowa Lemon Law Attorneys page goes through the statute text, the filing deadlines and used cars in more detail.

Step by Step

How an Iowa City Lemon Law Claim Works

This is what happens after you call us from Iowa City.

1

Document Your Repairs

Keep every repair order from your Iowa City dealership, even the short ones. Under Iowa's lemon law, those papers are the written proof of each repair attempt.

2

Free Case Evaluation

We read your repair history against the Iowa statute and tell you whether the car qualifies. The review costs nothing, and there are no attorney's fees unless we recover for you.

3

We File the Claim

We write and send the paperwork, including the written notice to the manufacturer that Iowa law requires. We deal with the manufacturer for you.

4

You Get Compensated

A successful case usually ends with a refund, a replacement vehicle or a cash settlement. There are no attorney's fees unless we recover for you.

Iowa Code §322G.1 to §322G.15

Is Your Iowa City Car a Lemon? Iowa's 3-Step Test

1

Does the Defect Substantially Impair Use, Value, or Safety?

Under Iowa law, the defect has to substantially impair the vehicle's use, value, or safety.

2

Have You Met the Repair Attempt Threshold?

In Iowa the test is 3 repair attempts for the same defect (1 for serious safety defects) or 30 cumulative calendar days out of service, as long as the claim is brought within the deadline in step 3. For a defect that could cause serious bodily injury or death, 1 repair attempt is enough. Count the visits on your repair orders to see where you stand.

3

Did It Happen Within the Rights Period?

In Iowa, a claim must be filed within 1 year from the expiration of the lemon law rights period, which ends 2 years after original delivery or at 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. We check that deadline against the delivery date on your contract and the dates on your repair orders.

If you are not sure about your dates, call us. The consultation is free. 📞 (855) 435-3666

If you think you are past a deadline, call us anyway. We may still be able to help.

Johnson County

Court and Venue in Iowa City

Iowa City is in Johnson County. Johnson County's general civil trial court is the Iowa District Court for Johnson County, in Judicial District 6. Which court hears a particular case still depends on its facts, the warranty issues involved and the law it is brought under.

The Iowa lemon law is Iowa Code §322G.1 to §322G.15. Arbitration is voluntary in Iowa.

The repair test in the statute is 3 repair attempts for the same defect (or 1 for serious safety defects), or 30 cumulative calendar days with the vehicle out of service. The statutory remedy is a replacement vehicle or a full refund, minus a reasonable offset for use. Under the statute, a consumer who prevails can recover attorney fees from the manufacturer.

Open recalls on your vehicle can be checked against NHTSA records at easylemon.com/recalls. A recall alone is not a lemon law claim.

Iowa Lemon Law: The Rules That Decide an Iowa City Claim

Looking for the repair test or the arbitration rule? Those are under Court and Venue above. Iowa law has a few more rules, and they are listed here.

Notable provisions of Iowa Lemon Law

Iowa counts calendar days and requires 3 repair attempts. One attempt is sufficient for defects causing death or serious injury. Written notice to the manufacturer is required.

Your Rights Under Iowa Law

What The Manufacturer Owes You

By statute, the Iowa remedy is a replacement vehicle or a full refund, minus a reasonable offset for use. When an Iowa City car qualifies under Iowa law, the case usually ends in one of three ways.

$

Refund

The manufacturer buys the car back. It repays the price along with the taxes, registration fees and finance charges, but it may deduct a reasonable use offset.

Replacement Vehicle

Instead of money you get a comparable new car, and the swap costs you nothing.

$

Cash Settlement

The statute does not set this one. It comes from negotiation: you keep the car, and the manufacturer pays for the value the defect took off it.

Have Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

The answers below are based on Iowa law and on the paperwork Iowa City drivers usually send us.

ELIGIBILITY
It may. Under Iowa Code §322G.1 to §322G.15, your Iowa City car can qualify if a defect covered by the warranty is still there after 3 repair attempts for the same defect (or 1 for serious safety defects), or 30 cumulative calendar days out of service. The statute covers new motor vehicles purchased or leased in Iowa for personal, family, or household use.
We handle warranty defects that substantially impair the car's use, value or safety and that the dealer could not fix. The defects we see most often are engine stalling and misfires, transmission shudder or failure, electrical faults, brake and steering problems, and driver-assist systems that brake or drift on their own.
PROCESS & TIMELINE
Usually not. Most lemon law cases we handle for Iowa City drivers settle with the manufacturer before a lawsuit is filed. In Iowa, arbitration is voluntary. It is not required.
REMEDIES
Under Iowa Code §322G.1 to §322G.15, the remedy is a replacement vehicle or a full refund, minus a reasonable offset for use. Which one you get depends on your repair history and on what the manufacturer offers.
ATTORNEY & TRUST
No. Our offices are in Manhasset NY, Newark NJ, Miami FL and Dallas TX. We handle Iowa cases by phone, email and e-signature. You upload your repair orders, your contract and your warranty booklet. We send the demand letter and handle the settlement paperwork. Nothing in Iowa Code §322G.1 to §322G.15 requires you to appear anywhere to open a claim.
Nothing upfront, and no attorney's fee unless we recover for you. In Iowa, the manufacturer pays the consumer's attorney's fees when the consumer wins. When a manufacturer settles, we ask it to pay our fee on top of your recovery. Repair orders are free from the dealer. We pay the filing costs while the case is open. To start, send us the repair orders for a free case review.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Easy Lemon has handled 3,000+ lemon law cases‡.

“I honestly didn't think I had a case. My Subaru's engine consumed a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. Dealer said it was 'within spec.' Did that three times. I just figured I'd live with it.
My brother-in-law, a mechanic, said 'that's not normal for a modern engine. Call someone.' So I did. I spoke to Steven Nassi at Easy Lemon.
He explained that excessive oil consumption is a known defect in certain Subaru engines. He'd handled similar cases. He said, 'They tell you it's normal because they don't want to replace the short block.' He already knew the internal service bulletins.
His team filed the claim. Subaru settled with a cash payment that covered my oil expenses and then some. I was genuinely surprised it worked.
Why different? Steven saw a pattern I didn't know existed. They don't just take cases; they know manufacturer secrets.”

“My Tesla Model Y had three things wrong that the service center couldn't fix: 1) Phantom braking on highway. 2) Passenger door handle wouldn't present half the time. 3) Rattling from the rear seat area they blamed on 'road noise.' I had service invoices showing four attempts on the brakes, two on the handle, and three on the rattle. Called Easy Lemon. Aaron Waldo took it. He didn't treat them as three small problems. He argued they collectively impaired the vehicle's safety and value. Manufacturer settled with a cash payout plus extended warranty on the remaining issues. They bundle your headaches into one real case."”

“I'm not a lawyer, but I tried. I filed complaints with the BBB. I called the manufacturer's customer service line so many times they knew my voice. I even wrote a letter to the dealership owner. Nothing.
My Honda Pilot's fuel system kept throwing check engine codes for the evaporative emissions system. Four visits, four 'fixes,' four returns of the light.
A friend said 'just call a lemon law firm already.' I called Easy Lemon and spoke to Natalie Nassi. First thing she said: 'You've done the hard work already. Now let us do ours.'
She was right. She took my mountain of paperwork—my letters, my complaint case numbers, my repair orders—and organized it into a real claim. The manufacturer settled in two months.
Why them? Natalie valued the effort I'd already put in. She didn't start from zero; she built on my frustration. That respect made all the difference.”
